In 2012, shrimp feed industry had suffered the worst situation with low survival rate of shrimp, high incidence of disease, feed raw materials prices skyrocketing, the increasingly brutal market competition. Coupled with the intensified economic crisis, many feed companies felt quite helpless and disoriented to either technology or operation. Under this background, Hinter persists with the theme ‘encouraging communication and promoting progress of the feed industry’. 2013 Hinter Symposium Nutrition & Feed Technology of Fish & Shellfish (Shrimp) was held in Zhanjiang, Guangzhou from 14-16 March 2013, which attracted more than 350 guests from China as well as Southeast Asian countries.

This symposium was organized by Guangzhou Hinter Biotechnology Co., Ltd and Guangdong Haid Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Research Center. Co-organizers are Zhanjiang Guolian Group, Evonik Degussa (China) and Buhler (China). Guangdong and Zhanjiang Feed Profession Association flavored this symposium with their tremendous support. Cai Yuzhen, the Secretary-General of Guangdong Profession Feed Association, attended and addressed the meeting.

8 presentations, which covered the different aspects of shrimp aquaculture feed enterprise, such as operating management, quality control, formula technology and shrimp culture technology, were presented in this symposium one by one.

Chen Han, the president of Zhanjiang Guolian Group, made a wonderful report about how to operate the shrimp industry chain and analyzed the challenges the shrimp industry chain have faced with, which provide a reference for all of the guests. Shrimp feed industry had encountered the large-scale disease outbreaks, raw materials prices skyrocketing, the export market malaise and antioxidants residue. Mr. Chen also described that the shrimp price waved frequently, only the enterprises that can follow the tendency can get the cost advantage. Make the most use of combinations of hatchery, feed, culture, and processing can enhance Goulian’s advantage to join the international shrimp market.

Chuang Jiecheng (Jeff), the president of Sheng Long Bio-Tech International Co., Ltd, Vietnam, shared his own idea about the South Asia shrimp industry. As a large shrimp production area with the good geographical and whether conditions, the shrimp industry in South Asia countries also have met a lot of problems such as diseases, high prices of feed materials, fiercely completion of export, technical barriers, Ethoxyquin, lack of capital. Besides the good suggests solving the above questions, Jeff also showed their trial result about Biofloc in Ben Tre province of Vietnam. Although it was a first trial, the research team has found that Biofloc real does work. Further researches will be carried out soon to find more suitable Biofol culture ways, then the Sheng Long technical service team can introduce and help more farmers.

Dr. Gao Wen, Evonik Degussa (China) Co., Ltd, made a report about recent researches on amino acid nutrition of fish and shrimp. With a lot of trial data, Dr. Gao showed the methionine requirements in the feed of salmon, tilapia, common carp, vannamei shrimp. As to vannamei shrimp, DL-Methionine is better to absorb. If lysine is 2.5% in the dry matter of feed daily, a vannamei shrimp with an initial weight of 0.5 g needs a Methionine value at about 0.9%.

Dr. Liu Donghui, Guangdong Haid Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Research Center, showed the guests with the current situation, reason, trends and prospects of the shrimp industry with his wonderful Chinese culture deposits. Dr. Liu said the present problems of the shrimp industry come from the disorder relationship of environment, organism and pathogen. For the quick economy development and high profit, some people do the shrimp business at the cost of the environment. He forecasted that more people would do research on shrimp seed, and the shrimp culture will be more environment-friendly with the shrimp feed with suitable nutrition. In fact, Guangdong Haid Group is doing many researches on shrimp seed, culture technology and feed nutrition. It was said that in 2016, the total feed production of Haid Group would reach 10 million tonnes, 50%of which was aqua feed.

Han Junwei, Senior engineer of Buhler (Changzhou) Machinery Co. Ltd, made a detail statement about the key points of shrimp feed processing. The shrimp farmers now care more about the shrimp appearance; it requires a good production designing, feed formulation, raw material QC and the machine operations. There are many problems often occur during our shrimp feed production, rich experiences are needed to solve them. Mr. Han shared his experiences freely with the participants.

Wang Rufeng, the technical director of Guangdong Haid Group Co., Ltd, expounded the current situation of the shrimp industry, how to make the production planning and choose the culture model of aquaculture. Mr. Wang showed 3 great shrimp culture models in China to share his idea, although the EMS was very terrible these years, there were still some farmers could be successful with different culture situations. Some common points among their successes are that: lower stocking density, larger harvest size, using good quality PL and culture the PL with strong technology. Some farmers don’t have enough technology and experiences, and then it needs the feed factory to be their technology support.

Dr. Zhang Song, Vice president of Guangzhou Hinter Biotechnology Co.,Ltd, shared the experiments of protein source replacements in shrimp commercial formulations with the guests freely. Many trial data show that squid meal can replace the fishmeal in the feed daily, but soybean protein concentrate, rice protein concentrate or chicken powder can’t performance as fish meal. Beer yeast can replace 50% soybean in the feed. With the higher prices of fish meal and soybean meal, many experiments are carried out every year. Dr. Zhang advised that many problems should be considered when did the replacements, palatability, amino acid balance, anti-nutritional factors, digestibility and unknown growth factors.

He Fen, Technical manager of Guangzhou Hinter Biotechnology Co., Ltd, put forward her practical insights about quality control of oil used in shrimp feed, like how to filter the oil quality control indicators. Ms. He used a lot of pictures and test data to compare the fish oil quality from different sources and showed the importance of different test items with many practical cases.

Zhanjiang Guolian Group, who exports shrimp to the United States with zero tariffs as well as the first listed shrimp enterprise with wholly-industry chains in China, can always catch every chance for development and create history at the critical time. In addition, guests were arranged to visit Zhangjiang Guolian’s feed factory, processing factory and shrimp trade market center. The model of shrimp industry chain, advanced enterprise management and garden-style factory environment impressed them most.

For all the guests, this meeting was not only a platform for exchanging ideas with each other about future prospects for the shrimp industry development, but also a wonderful travel with lots of harvest.
